Leon W. Horton (80) of Chemung, NY, suffered a short illness and passed away on March 9, 2024, peacefully surrounded by his family. Leon was born to Ralph and Bessie Horton on March 1, 1944, and was predeceased by his wife Donalee Horton. Leon is survived by his children Shawn (Elizabeth) Horton, Kelly (Denee') Horton, Jennifer (John) Heath. He is also survived by his brother Albert Horton, six grandchildren, and girlfriend Jane Lane and her family.
Leon was active for years as a trustee, deacon, and member of the Sayre Christian Church. He was well known by many young men in the valley as the scout master of BSA Troop 11 in Waverly, NY. Others knew him from the American Red Cross, the Lion's International, and the United Way.
Leon worked at Fraley's Amusement Park and Acme Market while in high school, International Stock Food in as a laborer and later a salesman, decades at the Sayre Water Company as a plant operator until he retired, and then years at Horn's True Value to keep himself busy. He enjoyed his coffee while he was at home and later at his cottage at Highland Lake. During the spring, summer, and fall if he could not be found in the valley, he would be found at the lake cottage.
The memorial service will be held Saturday March 16th at the Waverly Community Methodist Church. Viewing times will be from 9:00 am to 11:00 followed by a memorial celebration at 11:00. Officiating will be Reverend (ret.) James Donahoo and Pastor Cindy Schulte.
